« How To Use »

How long will the newly sharpened edge last?

The actual sharpening process takes less than three minutes to sharpen a pair of skates. You can use the Blade Doctor to extend the amount of time in between sharpenings, use it as a touch up, or you can use it for most all of your skate sharpening needs.

How often do I need to sharpen my skates with the Blade Doctor?

A good edge sharpened by the Blade Doctor should last about 2 skating sessions. It is recommended if you use the Blade Doctor™ almost exclusively to sharpen every skating session or every second or third time skating to insure a good, clean and consistent edge.

Step 1

Place the Blade Doctor on skate blade and stroke approximately 10-15 times. (Down & Back = 1 Stroke) Make sure to spin stone (next step) every 10-15 strokes to insure that you do not wear a flat spot on the stone. This increases the stone life (about 40 sharpenings)

Step 2

After stroking skate blade 10-15 times lift the back of the Blade Doctor™ and spin stone slightly (no need to remove Blade Doctor™ from blade).
Important Note: Stone must be spun every 10-15 strokes to insure that no flat spot is worn on stone.

Step 3

Continue steps 2 & 3 for approximately 60-100 strokes which is about 2 minutes or until you feel a “burr” on both sides of skate blade edge. See Step 5 for burr.

Important Note: The time it takes to sharpen your skate with the Blade Doctor™ depends on how dull you skate when you begin. If you maintain a good edge with the Blade Doctor after a skate or every other, the blade will sharpen quicker.

Step 4

Carefully feel with finger nails for a “burr” along both sides of skate blade from toe to heel. When you have achieved a burr you have successfully sharpened your blade. (go to Step 5)

Important Note: You will generally feel a “burr” first on the toe and heel of the skate first. This is because you skate more on your inside edge and in the middle of your skate, called skating rocker.

Step 5

Carefully and entirely remove the burr on both sides of the blade. Keep stone flat and feel for burr (Step 4) after side stoning.

Important Note: It is VERY important to remove the burr on the both sides or it may feel like your edges are dull.
